FAQ

Who can use Maxim™ Tampons?

Anyone who has a menstrual cycle can use a Tampon.

Anyone who wants to prevent leaks!

How are Maxim™ Pads different than other Pads?

Maxim’s Pads are made with only 100% natural cotton or 100% organic cotton in both the top sheet and absorbent core. In addition, Maxim™ uses no harmful chemicals such as chlorine or synthetics in its Pads.

What looks like cotton in many Pads is really a blend of cotton and synthetics, “cotton-like materials” that do not offer the same natural benefits of pure natural cotton materials. Some examples of synthetics and other ingredients used in conventional tampons include rayon, viscose, dioxins, polypropylene, polyethylene, pesticides, chlorine, BPA – the list goes on and on! Plus, if Pads include any sort of fragrances, that’s a double-dose of exposure to even more chemicals.

Where do we even start? First of all, we don’t use a crinkly plastic film layer. Sexy Period™ panties are breathable and, well…sexy! Our fun colors and lacy styles kick granny panties to the curb.

Sexy Period™ panties are designed to be a backup in addition to your usual tampon/sanitary pad routine. They're an extra layer of protection to prevent spill disasters. Keep in mind that Sexy Period™ panties are not designed to stop waterfalls!

What materials are Maxim™ Tampons made of?

Only 100% organic cotton.

The outer body of Sexy Period™ panties is made of 74% nylon and 26% lycra. The inner gusset is made of 100% micropolyester.

Will Maxim™ Pads irritate my skin?

Maxim™ uses only pure cotton ingredients and no harmful chemicals in its Pads in an effort to minimize irritation by maximizing airflow.

Over 90 women participated in our fabric tests and based on their experiences, there is no indication that Sexy Period™ fabric is irritating to skin. Your health and safety is important to us! In the case that you experience any discomfort while wearing Sexy Period™ panties, please let us know.

Will using Maxim™ Pads cause yeast infections?

Maxim™ uses only pure cotton ingredients and no harmful chemicals in its Pads in an effort to minimize irritation by maximizing airflow.

Sexy Period™ panties have been tested for air permeability alongside other leading brands of underwear (cotton and synthetic). The results show that Sexy Period™ exhibits breathability comparable to regular non-functional garments.

Gassspp! No way! Do you really think we would do that to you? Because we’re keeping you protected our panties may not be as thin as your slinkiest lingerie, but our fabrics are comparable to the everyday panties that you love to rock.

I have incontinence issues. Can I use Maxim™ Sanitary Pads as protection?

Yes.

Our labs are still doing extensive testing, and our current research indicates that Sexy Period™ panties will protect you from minor incontinence spills.

Will Maxim™ pantiliners protect me from minor leakage due to daily non-menstrual discharge?

Yes.

Yup! You got it sister. Our leak resistant panties have got your back.

Will period stains show through my Maxim™ Pads?

No.

The inside layer of Sexy Period™ panties are designed dark to prevent period stain show. Don’t worry—we thought of that too!

I don’t want my Maxim™ Pads to leak! What amount of flow liquid can they hold?

Maxim TM offers several different absorbencies, ranging from Lite (less than 6 grams) to Super Plus (12-15 grams)

Our labs are still out on the exact numbers of this one, but the main determinant will be how much activity you are doing. Sexy Period™ panties are proven as a stellar period backup to normal period leaks, so as long as you use your usual tampon/sanitary pad routine your sexy will be safe with us!

Fabric softeners and dryer sheets contain compounds that coat individual yarns in a garment during the washing/drying cycle making them feel soft. However, this coating can prevent the fabric from performing and protecting you like it is designed to.

Can I buy a Maxim™ gift card?

Maxim™ does not currently offer gift cards but you can order products directly from our website and have them sent as a gift.

At this time our website does not support gift cards. If you'd like to purchase a pair for someone else, we recommend asking the recipient her favorite design, cut, and size so you can order them for her.

How can I choose the right tampon absorbency?

The first time you use a Tampon you should use the lowest absorbency. Then, based on the following you should seek to choose the right absorbency for you:

  • If there is still a lot of white on your tampon when you remove it after 4 to 8 hours, use a lower absorbency.
  • If you leak through the tampon within the regular 4 to 8 hour window, you should use a higher absorbency tampon.

Sure! Check out our size chart. If you have more questions, feel free to contact us!

Do you offer Pads and Pantiliners for plus sizes?

Maxim™ offers Super Plus, extra long pads, classic contour pads and liners as well as Maternity Pads.

How can I submit comments and suggestions?

We would love to hear from you. Please contact us at feedback@maximhy.com with any questions or comments.

No, after you unwrap the Maxim™ Tampon, you pull the string. When you insert the tampon, your fingertip stays surrounded by the tampon’s body. Since there's no applicator, the Maxim™ Tampon begins to absorb as you insert it. And there's no mess to deal with! It's that easy!

Since most applicators are straight and the vagina curves, many women find insertion to be easier and are surprised at their instinctive ability to know where to place their tampon without needing an applicator. Fingertip insertion gives a woman more control, allowing her to follow the natural curve of the vaginal canal and insert the tampon where it is most comfortable for her body.

Can a tampon get lost inside Vaginal Canal?

No, because there's no place for it to go. The tampon has to stay in your vagina, which is a blind sac only 3" to 5" long. There is an opening from your vagina to your uterus through your cervix, but it's smaller than the head of a pin (much too small for a tampon to squeeze through)!

How often should I change Maxim™ Tampons during my period?

You can wear a tampon for up to 8 hours. Your flow level will determine how often you should change your tampon, and what absorbency you should use. Your flow will usually be heaviest at the beginning of your period. That's why you may want to use more than one absorbency during your period. You should use a tampon with the lowest absorbency to meet your needs.

Can I use more than one tampon?

While it may be physically possible to wear two tampons at one time, it should not be necessary and we do not recommend it. It can be dangerous.

Do I need to lubricate the tampon?

No, most women have enough natural lubrication to insert a tampon into vagina. Menstrual fluid also provides lubrication. If the tampon size is appropriate for the amount of flow, additional lubrication should not be necessary. We recommend using high absorbency tampons only when the flow is heavy and then switching to lower absorbency on lighter days. If you wish to use lubricant, we suggest applying a very small amount of water-soluble lubricant only on the tampon tip. Too much lubrication will interfere with the absorbency of the tampon. Do not use products such as petroleum jelly or other lotions and creams that are not intended for vaginal use.

Do tampons stop menstrual flow?

No. Menstrual flow is the result of discharge of tissue and blood from inside of the uterine cavity. Use of tampons does not stop the flow of menstrual fluid and has no effect on the release of fluid from the uterus. The tampon is designed to absorb fluid while still in the vagina. The tampon will become saturated and leaking will occur should more fluid be released than can be absorbed by the tampon. Rate of flow is not affected by the tampon.

Non-Applicator Tampons are so small, compared to Applicator Tampons?

Yes. For starters, if you take your usual tampon out of its applicator you'll see that it's not much bigger than non-applicator tampon. It's just a different shape. Maxim™ Non-Applicator Tampons were designed to expand in width so they fit your personal shape. So you know you're getting exactly the protection you need.

What does Maxim™ stand for?

Maxim™ means maximum respect for women and our environment.

How many Maxim™ tampon absorbency levels are there?

Maxim™ Tampons are available in 3 absorbencies

For beginning users or women with light to moderate flow, there is Maxim™ Regular.

For moderate flow, there is Maxim® Super.

For heavier flow, there is Maxim™ Super Plus

How do I know what the right tampon absorbency level is for me?

It is recommended that you use a tampon with the lowest absorbency needed to control menstrual flow. You may wish to try the smallest size and change to another size if, and as, necessary.

What is Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) and who is susceptible?

TSS is a rare disease believed to be caused by some forms of the bacterium called Staphylococcus aurous. This bacterium can be found normally in the vagina of some women. Without this bacterium, tampons alone have not been found to cause TSS. However, there are studies that have indicated tampons, in the presence of this bacterium, are associated with an increased risk of menstrual TSS.

By using tampons you increase your risk of getting menstrual TSS. It has been estimated that each year 1-17 of every 100,000 menstruating women and girls will get TSS. TSS occurs most often in menstruating females using tampons, in particular women under thirty years of age, and especially teenage girls. TSS also occurs, however, among men, children, and non-menstruating women.

What are the warning signs of TSS?

The initial symptoms are similar to the flu, and can include high fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, and disorientation. There may also be low blood pressure, shock, dehydration, sore throat, muscle pain, peeling skin, and a rash that resembles sunburn. Toxic Shock Syndrome can be fatal if it is not diagnosed and treated immediately.

These symptoms usually appear very quickly and are often severe. Not all TSS cases are alike, and all symptoms are not always present. Other signs might be aching of muscles and joints, redness of the eyes, sore throat and weakness.

What should I do if I think I might have TSS?

If you have a sudden high fever and one or more of the other TSS symptoms during your period, remove your tampon at once, discontinue using tampons, seek immediate medical attention, either from your doctor or from an emergency medical facility.

How does tampon absorbency affect the risk of TSS?

There are studies that suggest that higher absorbency tampons are associated with an increased risk of menstrual TSS. Therefore, you should use a tampon with the lowest absorbency that meets your menstrual flow needs to reduce your risk of getting menstrual TSS. Tampons are available in four absorbency ranges: regular absorbency for light flow (6-9 g); super absorbency for moderate flow (9-12 g); super plus absorbency for heavy flow (12-15 g); and ultra absorbency for extra heavy flow (15-18 g). Under this absorbency rating system adopted by all tampon manufacturers, all tampons within a given range have the same absorbency label.

Can a person get TSS more than once?

Yes. Once you've had TSS, you are more likely to get it again than someone who has never had the disease. If a doctor has told you that you have had TSS, or if you believe you might have had the disease, don't use tampons until you check with your doctor.

Do I need to use pantiliners with Tampons?

The use of a pantiliners or mini-pad with the tampon is generally not necessary. Maxim™ Tampon's unique design along with using the best absorbency for your flow should help prevent leakage.

Will I lose my virginity if I use tampons?

No. A girl can only lose her virginity by having sexual intercourse. Since the hymen (a membrane that stretches across the vaginal opening), is often thought to be a sign of virginity, some people think inserting a tampon will cause trauma. But the hymen naturally stretches. If it completely blocks your vaginal opening, menstrual fluid can't leave your body.

What are Hormones in a Woman’s body?

Hormones drive many of the processes and changes that occur within a woman's body, so it is important to understand their critical role. Hormones are chemical messengers and instigators that are produced by various organs and body tissues and then transported by the bloodstream to the cells and other organs. The hormones involved in regulating the menstrual / ovulation cycle are Estrogen, Progesterone, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). The levels of these hormones are low in childhood, increase during the reproductive years and lower again after menopause.

What is Ovulation?

Ovulation is a sign of a woman's fertility and therefore her ability to conceive. During ovulation an egg or ovum is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube. Usually one egg is released per cycle but occasionally two eggs are released. If you have a 28-day cycle you probably ovulate between the 11th and the 16th day from the 1st day of your period. Of course, not every woman is the same, but ovulation usually occurs 11 to 16 days before your period is due.

During ovulation a woman is most fertile and can become pregnant, however this can only happen when her egg is alive. The egg lives for less than 24 hours, if it is not fertilized, however sperm can survive within the woman's body for about 3-5 days before ovulation. The sperm can then fertilize the egg after ovulation.

The best way to predict ovulation is to monitor changes in vaginal discharge. For several days before ovulation a woman's body produces mucus from the cervix (the opening of the uterus), which is clear, slippery and stretchy. In the course of everyday activities you may be aware of sensations indicating the presence of this mucus. Once ovulation has occurred there is a noticeable change, as the mucus becomes thick and sticky. It is at this point (menstruation) that fertilization can no longer occur.

What is Pre-Menstrual Symptoms (PMS)?

Simply put, PMS is a range of emotional and physical symptoms that women suffer, at or before, their period starts. The symptoms usually clear when bleeding starts but for some women they can persist for a day or so longer.

Although, period pain is not usually included in the definition of PMS, many symptoms have been described as pre-menstrual, the most common being:

  • Headache
  • Cramps
  • Acne
  • Backache
  • Breast swelling or tenderness
  • Bloating and water retention
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Depression, irritability and tension.

The way women experience these symptoms varies considerably. While some women suffer considerably, others do not experience any of the above symptoms. The general consensus amongst medical practitioners is that some 70-90% of women suffer pre-menstrual symptoms during their reproductive years, 4% suffer badly and need help and 2-6% has severe and sometimes incapacitating symptoms.

Why do I have Heavy Bleeding during my Period?

Although the amount of blood loss per month varies enormously, depending on the individual, from a few teaspoons to half a liter, this amount tends to remain constant for that individual for the span of their reproductive years.

Remembering that heavy discharge for one woman could be normal for another, it is worth seeing a doctor if periods change and become heavier. As describing this to a Doctor can be difficult, it is possible to measure the discharge with a doctor’s assistance. The medical fraternity defines heavy menstrual bleeding (called menorrhagia) when discharge is more than 80mls in one period.

How can I look after myself?

Dealing with the emotional and physical changes in our lives requires balance, a good diet and forward planning. Minimizing stress is also a critical factor. Think of ways in which you can deal with stressful situations, by taking the time to relax. Even a hot bath, a walk can help or indulge in a body massage. For good health try and exercise at least 3 times a week, by walking, cycling, tennis or jogging and eat well.

What is Menstruation?

Menstruation happens two weeks after ovulation. The length of time bleeding and amount of blood loss varies according to the individual.

Many women miss periods for one or several months, or when stress and anxiety are present, if travelling or training strenuously. A missed period can also mean that a woman is pregnant. If you suspect that you may be pregnant it is recommended that you consult a doctor.

Your period is only one part of your menstrual cycle.

  • Stage One

Inside the abdomen there are two ovaries. Egg cells grow in them. Each ovary is connected by a fallopian tube. The cervix, or neck of the uterus, is at the top end of the vagina.

  • Stage Two

After a menstrual period, an egg cell begins to develop in one of the ovaries. The lining of the uterus starts to grow thicker.

  • Stage Three

Once a month an egg leaves one of the ovaries. This is called OVULATION. The egg travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus. The lining of the uterus becomes thick and full of blood. Just before ovulation, the mucus of the cervix becomes more liquid.

  • Stage Four

When an egg is not fertilized, it will dissolve, and you will have a period because the blood-filled lining of the uterus breaks down and leaves the body through the vagina. This bleeding is called MENSTRUATION. The cycle then starts again. When an egg is fertilized, a pregnancy occurs and menstruation almost always stops.

What is a Menstrual Cycle?

The menstrual cycle (or ovulation cycle) is the length of time between one period and the next, when the lining of the womb is shed as menstrual bleeding. The normal range of a menstrual cycle falls between 28 to 35 days. If you chart the cycle you can see what is normal for you. Twenty-eight days is often quoted as normal but this is not always the case and variations do occur. If so, the cycle can be anywhere between 21 to 40 days. It is important to remember that cycles are individual and can vary from month to month and also change over the years.

A cycle lasts from the beginning of menstruation until the day before bleeding starts again with the first day of bleeding being classified as day 1.

Discharge is heaviest in the first few days and then tapers off. Early discharge may be brownish and initially slow then becomes a darker red before becoming lighter in color and flow. The amount of discharge varies as well, but up to 80mls is considered normal loss. It is interesting to note that only part of the discharge is in fact blood, the rest is made up of tissue fluids and (endometrial) cells.

The two main events of the cycle are menstruation and ovulation. Once ovulation occurs, there is approximately two weeks (between 12-16 day) until menstruation begins.

How can we eat well?

Lack of certain vitamins is believed to affect the level of hormones of the menstrual cycle. So, it is important to have a wholesome diet.

This includes:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables every day
  • Wholemeal breads, brown rice and nuts
  • Lean meat, fish and chicken
  • Unsaturated fats e.g. cold pressed vegetable oils
  • Low fat dairy products
  • Lots of water and fruit juice

Limit or avoid:

  • Junk foods
  • Caffeinated drinks
  • Alcohol/ cigarettes
  • Salt and saturated fats.
  • Foods high in refined sugars, e.g. soft-drinks, lollies, biscuits.

Try and exercise at least 3 times a week, by walking, cycling, tennis or jogging.

What is Puberty?

At about the age of 9 to 12 children's bodies begin to undergo remarkable changes that will transform them into adults. Puberty is the time when physical changes occur and sexual maturity is reached. It is usually complete when a girl is capable of bearing a child and for a boy when he can father one.

Adolescence involves emotionally, intellectually and physically becoming an adult. It starts at the same time as puberty and can go on for a number of years.

The physical changes for girls begin between the ages of 9-12 (this can vary according to the individual) and for boys a year or two later. Puberty is controlled by the body's hormones and results in a growth spurt where every bone and muscle in the body grows.

At this time sex hormones are produced and the most obvious changes that result from these are in the breasts, pubic and underarm hair, and voice change and, in boys, beard growth.

What are the Events of Puberty?

  • 9 - 11 Years of Age
  • Growth spurt begins
  • Nipples bud and enlarge
  • Fine pubic hairs appear
  • 11 - 13 Years of Age
  • Breasts begins to develop
  • External genitals begin to grow
  • Internal reproductive organs grow and develop
  • 12 - 14 Years of Age
  • Nipples become darker
  • Breasts develop further
  • 13 - 15 Years of Age
  • Coarser pubic hair appears
  • Hair appears in armpits
  • Further breast development
  • 10 - 16 Years of Age
  • Menstruation begins
  • 13 - 17 Years of Age
  • Increase of fat on thigh and breasts
  • 15 - 18 Years of Age
  • Growth in height stops
  • Periods become more regular

What is Acne?

Acne is a very common disorder of the oil glands of the skin. It affects 80% of us during our lives, mostly between 15 and 30 years of age. Acne includes everything from an occasional blemish, whiteheads, blackheads and pimples in their severest form, all of which can be helped by proper treatment.

The aim is to unblock the ducts below the skin and your chemist or doctor will suggest the most appropriate method for you. Treatments take time, so be patient. It may take a couple of months to produce good results but here are some tips that may help you in the meantime.

Wash the area with mild soap once or twice a day. Dry gently and don't scrub.

Don't try to squeeze out blackheads, whiteheads and pimples as you may damage your skin.

What are Eating Disorders?

Anorexia Nervosa is a real and intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat. This leads to under eating and dangerous weight loss. Anorexics have a distorted self image and see themselves as overweight.

Bulimia is an obsession with body weight and shape. Bulimics go on eating binges after which, because they fear weight gain, they deliberately vomit, use laxatives or exercise strenuously. This drains the body of vital nutrients and puts a strain on organs such as the heart.

People with Anorexia or Bulimia have low self-esteem and little control over their eating behavior. Both can lead to severe illness or even death from prolonged fasting or from severe depression.

What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)?

Sexually transmitted diseases or STD's result from infections, which can be passed on from one person to another during sex. A person can pass it on to another person through vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse and oral sex. There are two main types of STD's, those caused by viruses (more serious) and those caused by bacteria.

The common viral STD's are:

  • Genital warts
  • Genital herpes
  • Hepatitis B
  • HIV- the AIDS virus.

Warts and herpes can appear as small sores on the affected areas - usually the penis or vagina. Hepatitis B can infect the liver and cause fever and could be fatal in some cases. HIV is discussed below.

The most common bacterial STD's are:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis

STD's can result from small bugs which can infect parts of our bodies such as the groin. Some symptoms may include:

  • Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
  • Lumps, sores, rashes, blisters or itching on the genitals
  • Pain when urinating

Of course these symptoms may be due to something else, especially if you are not having sex, but if you are then make sure you have regular, general checkups with your doctor.

What is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. ‘Acquired’ because it is a disease that you catch from another person, i.e. it is infectious, ‘Immune Deficiency’ because the disease stops the body's immune system from fighting off infectious diseases and ‘Syndrome’ because it is a disease that has a wide range of symptoms.

The AIDS virus is carried in the blood, semen, vaginal fluid and breast milk of infected people. It attacks the body leaving it unable to fight infections and cancers, which may kill a person. The virus can be transmitted:

  • Through sexual activities such as vaginal and anal intercourse and oral sex, however this risk is reduced if a condom is used.
  • By sharing needles and syringes during intravenous drug use.
  • Through an infected mother who can pass the virus to her baby during pregnancy and through breastfeeding.
  • It is not possible to catch the AIDS virus from kissing, touching, coughs/sneezes, saliva, toilet seats, swimming pools, food or water.

What is Menopause?

Menopause literally means the end of menstruation and usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 55. It is the final event of a woman's reproductive life when her ovaries stop releasing eggs and the production of estrogen and progesterone becomes low. There are a number of symptoms associated with menopause that you should be aware of. These are:

  • Menstrual Cycles become shorter or longer
  • Missing periods
  • Bleeding becomes lighter or heavier
  • Headaches and hot flushes
  • Skin eruptions
  • Worsening bladder control
  • Psychological symptoms such as insomnia, lack of energy, irritability, anxiety, lack of concentration and poor short-term memory.

Naturally not all women experience the same thing. Although most women will experience one or all of these symptoms when going through menopause, some women’s periods will remain regular.

Without treatment menopausal symptoms may last between a few months to many years. To discuss the treatments available it is worth consulting your doctor.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is the gradual reduction in bone density due to the loss of essential bone minerals, such as calcium. From the age of 35 onward bones slowly begin losing calcium in both men and women, but with the onset of menopause the loss of calcium is far greater in women. Some of this can be attributed to hormonal changes, as reductions in estrogen contribute to the loss of calcium. When this occurs, bones become frail and the risk of fracture is increased particularly in the spine, hip and wrist.

What is Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence (sometimes referred to as ‘Bladder Weakness’) is the inability to control the passing of urine. It is a common problem that can affect anyone, however because of its nature most people find it embarrassing to discuss with others.

If you feel that you may suffer from incontinence, it is best to discuss it with your doctor, as solutions, advice and support are readily available.

What is Breast Cancer?

Due to the fact that there is little known about the precise factors which lead to cells within the breast becoming cancerous, it is difficult to predict courses for the disease’s prevention. However, it has been acknowledged that early detection, and in turn, treatment greatly improves the chances of successfully fighting breast cancer.

It is never too early to start the detection process. Here are some tips:

  • Make sure you examine your breasts every month after your period - ask your doctor to show you how to do this properly. If you notice a change in your breast tissue, consult your doctor.
  • Get your doctor to examine your breasts once a year.
  • It is recommended women start having regular mammograms (x- ray of breast tissue) at the age of 50, every two years.

If you have any questions or concerns about anything to do with your body or your health, you should contact your Doctor as soon as possible.

Maxim™ is not a medical body and the information provided in this website is no substitute for professional medical advice.

Do Maxim™ Products use any kind of Animal Testing?

Maxim™ does not test on animals during the manufacturing process of our products. We are strongly opposed to any and all uses of animal testing and supports all efforts to develop alternatives to animal testing as a core and fundamental part of the our mission and values. Maxim™ has never in its history conducted any animal tests. When you purchase a product from us, you also have our commitment that never in the future will we conduct any tests on animals.

Does Maxim™ Products Use SAP (SAP - Super Absorbent Polymer (aka Sodium Polyacrylate)?

Most Pads, Panty Liners and Diapers manufacturers use SAP to increase the absorbency of their products and to increase its performance. It should be noted that SAP is derived from petroleum.

It can absorb up to 100 times its weight in liquid. After absorbing the liquid it changes its shape to a Gel-like substance which can stick to the body and causing allergic reactions or even severe skin irritations. SAP was banned from tampons in 1985 because of its link to Toxic Shock Syndrome.

Maxim™ products do not use any kind of substances (either Chemical “SAP” or Natural “SNAP”) to increase the absorbency of the cotton absorbent core of our products.

What is SNAP?

One of the absorbent ingredients is Lysorb, an absorbent gel. Lysorb, also known as SNAP (super natural absorbent polymer), is a polysaccharide derived from wheat. Polysaccharides are complex sugars found in many natural substances, like the fibers of cotton, wood, and wheat.

How do I request a coupon for Maxim™ products?

Do you use any kind of Chlorine substances in your bleaching process?

No, Maxim™ does not use Chlorine to bleach any of our products. We use Hydrogen Peroxide solution instead. We believe in processing without the use of chemicals containing chlorine because chlorine processing can produce chlorinated hydrocarbons, which have a negative impact on the environment. By choosing not to process with chlorine, we help reduce the overall amount of chlorinated toxins released into the environment, and in that way we're helping to make the world a healthier place for you and your family.

Are Maxim™ Wet Wipes Flushable or Biodegradable?

Maxim™ Wet Wipes are not flushable; the cloth substrate is an Organic Cotton blend. It can be disposed in the landfills and will be biodegraded in a short period of time.

What does TCF mean?

TCF stands for Totally Chlorine Free. This means there was no chlorine used in the whitening and disinfecting process.

What's the difference between ECF and TCF whitening processes?

Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) is the bleaching process used by most wood pulp or Rayon manufacturers and cotton convertors to disinfect and whiten the wood pulp, rayon and/or cotton. While the process avoids the use of chlorine gas (elemental chlorine), it uses Chlorine Dioxide (a chlorine containing chemical) to achieve bleaching. The ECF process can produce chlorinated toxins which are then released into the environment. It also leaves some kind of residue inside the wood pulp, Rayon or cotton called “Dioxin”.

Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) uses whitening agents such as Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Hydrosulfite. These chemicals do not contain chlorine. Maxim™ uses only TCF processes to whiten the Cotton used to produce all our products.

Why are recycled paper products often more expensive than virgin paper products?

We at Maxim™ decided to produce all our cardboard packaging from recycled material. Unfortunately, there is greater demand for virgin paper and manufacturers of virgin paper products are able to take advantage of economies of scale and pass on lower costs to the consumer.

Also, there is generally more costly processing involved in bringing to market recycled paper for consumer use. There are high, post-consumer content requirements for collecting and sorting through recovered waste paper, newsprint, etc…including labor and time intensive processes. Once the scrap paper has been sorted, it then needs to be de-inked before it can be formed into finished product.

What is Biodegradability?

Biodegradability is the ability of a substance or material to be broken down into its fundamental parts by exposure to the natural action of elements like microorganisms, sunlight, and water. Products that are biodegradable do not accumulate in the environment. Further, their biodegradation means that they have become a nutrient to other biological processes, which is necessary for planet Earth to be self-sustaining.

When a product does not biodegrade, it remains in the environment indefinitely. As more and more of the substance accumulates its chemical concentration and toxic effects increase which means that a relatively safe chemical can then become a dangerous one.

What is CANDIDIASIS (pathological leucorrhoea)?

The "ground" takes on here a great importance since they are boosted by the vaginal acidity, the excessive maceration of the perineum, antibiotic or estrogenic-progestin therapy, diabetes, pregnancy, etc.

What is GARDNERELLA VAGINALIS (BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS)?

It is an imbalance of the vaginal flora at the expense of gardnerella vaginalis (GV) and various anaerobic germs. Frequent, common and generally without serious consequences, this condition is characterized by the spread of anaerobic germs and the reduced presence of the normal vaginal flora (bacillus of Döderlein). The term vaginosis expresses well the usual lack of vulvo-vaginal inflammation.

What is HEPATIC METABOLISM?

A drug metabolism is the enzymatic transformation of the drug in one or several components, called metabolites, which can also be active as the original molecule, inactive until they are metabolized in an active drug in the body, or even toxic. The metabolism is one of the elimination phases of a drug: the various stages of the metabolism lead to the formation of water-soluble substances, most easily eliminated through aqueous media such as the urine, bile, saliva, etc. The drug metabolism is actually carried out in the liver, and also in the kidneys, lungs, intestines, etc.

What is LEUCORRHOEA?

It is a non-bloody, whitish, and viscous discharge from the vaginal cavity. It can be physiological (by a secretion of the cervical muscle and vaginal desquamation), or pathological that indicates an infection, most commonly a virginities, candidacies or virginities. Physiologic leucorrhoea: The vagina naturally contains a physiologic leucorrhoea during the reproductive age period. The normal discharge is of about 2 ml per day, except during pregnancy. It comprises: plasma transudate; cervical mucus; vaginal epithelial cells with a high glycogen content; polymorphonuclear blood cells; an important microbial flora: bacillus of Döderlain that balances the pH; a small quantity of germs: Staphylococci, streptococci, Escherichia; the vaginal environment is acidic since the bacillus of Döderlain produces lactic acid. The vaginal pH is 4.5. It is an ecosystem that is highly dependent on the hormonal activity. The leucorrhoea is a normal physiological phenomenon that indicates a good estrogenic impregnation. Pathological leucorrhoea: VULVO-VAGINAL CANDIDIASIS The "ground" takes on here a great importance since they are boosted by the vaginal acidity, the excessive maceration of the perineum, antibiotic or estrogenic-progestin therapy, diabetes, pregnancy, etc. GARDNERELLA VAGINALIS (BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS) it is an imbalance of the vaginal flora at the expense of gardnerella vaginalis (GV) and various anaerobic germs. What is METRORRHAGIA?

Genital bleeding occurring outside of the menstrual cycles. Metrorrhagia can occur in women after menopause or because of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. In this case, the fetus can develop in the tubes instead of the uterus and therefore cause the rupture of a blood vessel. Metrorrhagia can also be a sign of hemoperitoneum. This is considered a medical emergency. The term metrorrhagia does in no way mean the increase flow of the bleeding. Metrorrhagia should not be confused with menorrhagia that represents abnormally long and heavy menstrual flows.

What is PREBIOTICS?

Prebiotics are usually short-chain oligosaccharides or polysaccharides comprising approximately two to twenty sugar units. They are not digested in the small intestine and constitute potential substrates for hydrolysis and fermentation of intestinal bacteria. Prebiotics must act as selective substrate of one or a limited number of beneficial bacterial strains that live in the colon and stimulate their growth. Bifidobacteria and lactobacillus are the microorganisms of the intestinal macrobiotic (intestinal flora) most frequently concerned. What is VAGINAL ECOSYSTEM?

The vagina is a dynamic ecosystem where each woman has 8 to 10 germs. The dominant flora is the Döderlein bacilli: lactobacilli covering the vaginal mucosa. It transforms the glycogen contained in the vaginal and cervical cells thanks to the estrogenic impregnation with lactic acid. This lactic acid is the reason why the vagina pH is acidic, that has the role to protect against microbial outbreaks. This balanced aero-anaerobic flora actually protects against the attachment and colonization of pathogenic germs in the vagina.

What is VAGINAL MYCOSES?

The vaginal mycoses, also called vaginal candidacies, represent infections caused by yeast, most commonly by the yeast Candida albicans, in the genital area. This causes the inflammation of the vagina. The vaginal mycoses can also affect the labia minora and the labia majora that are external genital organs. It is not a disease caused by the lack of hygiene, but by the disruption of the natural vaginal flora, that can be caused by several factors. Vaginal mycoses affects a high number of women, meaning that close to 75% of the women suffer from vaginal mycoses at least once in their life. Given that vaginal mycoses are caused by yeasts (generally by the yeast Candida albicans), some factors can favor the excess growth of this yeast (Candida albicans is always present in the vaginal area but in a small quantity), such as: hormonal variations (menstrual cycle), pregnancy (often during the third trimester), diabetes, medication (antibiotics), thyroid disease, stress, contraceptive pill, bad local hygiene, for example when you use the bathroom, you should clean the genital area from the front to the back (from the vagina towards the anus) to avoid the contamination of the vagina with yeasts from the intestines, an excessive hygiene of the genital area, undergarments that are too tight or that are made out of synthetic materials, age (elderly subjects are more likely to suffer from vaginal mycoses), an infection in another area of the body (the immune systems "works" too hard and mycoses can develop more easily). The first symptom of the vaginal mycoses (vaginal candidacies) is itching. Sensations of burning, pain and white and often odorless discharges are also present. A certain redness on the genital area and pain in the vagina are also possible. In a nutshell, there are 3 typical symptoms of the vaginal mycoses: 1. intense itching or burning sensations; 2. vaginal discharges (whitish and grainy); 3. Redness (swelling). Please note that the pains caused by vaginal mycoses can be increased by miction or sexual intercourse. Please be aware, itching or pains in the vagina area are not necessarily symptoms of vaginal mycoses, quite the contrary, they can be symptoms of other diseases: bacterial infections, genital herpes, allergy, etc. Please see your doctor for a precise diagnostic and the best treatment for your disease of infection.

What is VAGINITIS?

Vaginitis is the inflammation of the vulva, of the vagina, or of both, or an abnormal discharge not related to a cervicitis. Contrary to common belief, the vaginitis is rarely caused by a sexually transmitted infection. The protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis is the only sexually transmitted agent known to cause a vulvo-vaginitis, representing only 5% of the vaginitis causes. Regular consultations for this pathology are an important step in the evaluation of women at risk of developing a sexually transmitted infection.
